On this year’s World Environment Day (5 June), Marijke, one of our dedicated volunteers, is making a bold and inspiring commitment that merges personal reflection, environmental responsibility, and support for Age in Spain’s mission.

After a simple wardrobe clean-out in rural Spain, Marijke noticed something all too familiar: “So many clothes I barely wore.”  andshe asked herself—why so much stuff?

Her answer? A year-long personal challenge:

No new clothes or shoes for 12 months.

Instead, each month, Marijke will donate what she would have spent on clothing to Age in Spain, supporting our core services like the Friendline, Infoline, and Advocacy program—lifelines for English-speaking older people across Spain.

“Both the environment and Age in Spain are important to me. This challenge helps me align my values with action. Let’s see how I handle the temptation!”

This deeply personal initiative is not just about consumption habits—it’s about rethinking what we need, and how we can support those who need us. Her openness about the difficulty (“I love the adrenaline rush of buying something new!”) makes the pledge all the more authentic.

We’re excited to share Marijke’s story and are curious—would you join her? Whether by taking on your own version of the challenge, or sponsoring her effort with a small monthly donation, this is a unique opportunity to take action for both people and planet.

Do you have a personal sustainability pledge you’d like to share? Would you consider making a donation in solidarity with Marijke’s journey? Get in touch—we’d love to hear your story.

Let’s celebrate World Environment Day by making thoughtful changes and supporting those who need it most. 🌍
