Introduction
After living in Spain on a Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) for one year, you’ll need to renew it to continue your stay. The first renewal covers years 2 and 3, and the second covers years 4 and 5. Once your visa renewal is approved, you can then renew your TIE (residency card).
This guide is for people who already have a Non-Lucrative Visa. It doesn’t apply to British nationals covered by the Withdrawal Agreement.

If you have legally lived in Spain for one year on an NLV, you may also consider changing your visa to a working visa.
When to Renew
You can renew:
Up to 60 days before your visa expires
Up to 90 days after it expires.
If you are applying in person for the renewal it is important to apply as early as you can – appointments can be hard to obtain.
First renewal: Covers Years 2 and 3
Second renewal: Covers Years 4 and 5
After 5 years: You may be eligible for permanent right to residency. For more information on the types of Residency, see our guide here.
What You Need to Renew
To renew your NLV, you need to have sufficient economic means and health coverage for the forthcoming 2 years. You should also have been present and living in Spain for at least six months during the first year of your visa.
Sufficient Economic Means
You must prove that you have enough income or savings to support yourself (and any dependents) for the next two years.
The amount is based on the IPREM, which is a standard income benchmark in Spain.
In 2025, the annual IPREM is €7,200.
You need 400% of the IPREM per year for yourself. That’s €57,600 for 2 years.
For each dependent, add €14,400 (100% IPREM per year for 2 years).
Example:
If you’re renewing for yourself and 1 dependent:
You: €57,600
Dependent: €14,400
Total: €72,000
Make sure your proof (bank statements, pensions, etc.) clearly shows this amount.

Sometimes the immigration office will insist that any capital or savings used to apply for a visa is held in a Spanish Bank account and has been so for at least 6 months.
Health Insurance
You must show proof of one of the following:
- A private health insurance policy with no copayments or deductibles.
- A registered UK-issued S1 form.
- Proof of enrollment in the Convenio Especial health scheme.
How to Renew Online
You can submit your application online using the Mercurio platform providing that you have a current digital certificate.

Before you begin, ensure you have all the required documentation ready to upload. Each individual document can be no greater than 6MB and the maximum total is 16MB. You cannot use Zip files so ensure you use compression software (making sure the document is still legible).
If you complete the process online you will go through the form EX01 so you therefore do not need to precomplete a copy.

Steps for the on-line application
Step 1 – create a case number (unless you already have one).
Step 2 – complete the online version of the EX01.
Step 3 – Upload the required documents (see list)
Step 4 – Download your completed EX01 and upload it to validate it here
Step 5 – Upload the validated and signed EX01
Step 6 – Pay the required Fee. Follow this link to pay the required fee online. Then include an uploaded copy the receipt of the payment with your application.
Step 7 – Submit your application.
Step 8 – To check the progress of your application, follow this link. The stages it will usually go through are, received, then en tramite (in progress) then hopefully resolution!
Step 9 – Follow the steps below to renew your TIE.

Documents Required for online applications:
- TIE Renewal Fee Payment Receipt
- Valid Passport – copy of all pages, including front and back covers
- Copy of current TIE
- Proof of Financial Means (bank statements, pensions, etc.).
- Health Insurance Certificate or S1 form or proof of membership to the Convenio Especial.
- Recent copy of Empadronamiento
- Marriage certificate (if making dual application) sworn translated and apostilled
How to Renew in person
Renewal applications can be submitted to your local immigration office. You will need to book an appointment (cita previa) in advance at your local immigration office. Visit the Electronic Office here, select your province and follow the instructions to book a cita previa.
Required documentation:
- Completed Application Form (EX-01).
- TIE Renewal Fee Payment Receipt (Modelo 790-052).
- Valid Passport (original + copy).
- Current TIE (original + copy).
- Proof of Financial Means (bank statements, pensions, etc.).
- Health Insurance Certificate or S1 form or proof of membership to the Convenio Especial.
- Recent copy of Empadronamiento.
- Marriage certificate (if making dual application) sworn translated and apostilled
After Visa Approval - Renewing Your TIE
Once your visa is renewed, and you have received a favourable outcome (resolución favorable), follow these steps to obtain your new TIE card:
Visit the Electronic Office here and select your province and the option for “Toma de huellas”
Required Documentation:
- NLV Renewal Resolution Favorable.
- Completed EX-17 Application Form.
- Passport (original + copy).
- TIE Renewal Fee Payment Receipt (Modelo 790-012).
- Current TIE (original + copy).
- Recent passport-size photo.
Depending on the office, you will either be told when to return to collect the TIE, or you will be asked to book another appointment to collect your TIE. In some very busy offices they publish “lote numbers” which are the batches of TIE’s which are ready for collection.
