Health and Social Care in Spain: What English Speakers Need to Know
Martyn Standing spent 18 years working in health and social care for English speakers in Spain, most of it at the British Consulate in Alicante. In this interview for Age in Spain he covers what people should sort out before they need it: residency and padrón registration, why the Spanish and UK systems work differently, and why you shouldn’t wait until you’re ill to register for healthcare. He also explains what to do at the first signs of dementia, how the Ley de Dependencia works and why applications can take up to two years, the risk of carer burnout, and what families overseas can do when they realise something isn’t right. Plus the case of a man living on a boat who woke up to a 40,000 euro hospital bill.
