Caring for a Husband with Dementia in Spain: Victoria’s Story

Victoria cared for her husband Alan at home in Spain for years, on her own. In this interview for Age in Spain she talks about the questions he started repeating, the brain scan that confirmed what she already suspected, and the parts of caring she found hardest.

She describes the night at four in the morning when she reached the point of needing someone to talk to, and how she found Age in Spain’s dementia carers group on Facebook, then InfoLine and Friendline. She also talks about losing her sister weeks after Alan, and about the life she has slowly built since: local fiestas, Friday dances, and taking the leap of faith to say yes when her neighbours asked.
