Registering your Vehicle in Spain
If you are planning to bring your car or vehicle to Spain, you will have to register it with the Spanish authorities.
For how long can I drive until having to register my vehicle?
If you are a non-resident, you have 6 months to register the vehicle until having to take it back to the UK.
If you are a resident, you have 1 month since the import to register your UK vehicle.
Importing a car
You can import a car without paying customs taxes as your personal vehicle under the regime “cambio de residencia“. The car must be owned for some time, otherwise you will need to pay customs. Below you can find the information we offer about going through customs when moving to Spain.
How to register my vehicle
You will need to book an appointment with the Traffic department (DGT). On the website, select your province and the option “Trámites de Oficina”. On the following page, select the option “Área vehiculos“. You will need to fill in your personal details to book the appointment.
After booking the appointment, gather the following documents to present them at the DGT office.
ITV card
Receipt of the registration fees from the DGT
Receipt of the necessary taxes to carry out the procedure.
– Proof of payment or exemption of the circulation tac of the city council
– Proof of payment of registration tax (Model 576, 06 or 05 of the AEAT)
